A critical review is presented of current techniques for measuring total neutron capture cross-sections in the epithermal and resonance region starting from the detection of prompt gamma-rays. Special emphasis is put on methods which are as much as possible insensitive to the shape of the actual gamma spectrum. The various facilities which are still operational are described and classified using the traditional distinction of total absorption and total energy detectors; attention is focused on this second type. The determination of the prompt detection sensitivity to neutron scattering is discussed in some detail since this factor severely limits the accuracy of the results whenever the scattering-to-capture ratio is large.
