Joining of SiC to SiC using a preceramic polymerFunded under: EAEC-FUSION 12C
A preceramic polymer (GE SR350 silicone resin) was used to join sintered alpha-SiC bodies. SiC specimens were heated in an argon flux at temperatures ranging from 900 C to 1200 C, without applying any pressure. The joint quality was determined by microstructural examination and by fracture shear stress tests for comparative evaluation. In certain conditions, room temperature fracture shear stress values as high as 37 MPa were obtained. Specimens of SiC/SiC fibre composites were also joined using a similar procedure, resulting in shear stress values of about 55 % of that of the composite itself.
