Report on ITER emergency task : Fatigue studies of S65c berylliumFunded under: FP3-FUSION 11C
Thermal fatigue life of S65c beryllium castellated to a geometry 6 x 6 x (8-10) mm deep has been tested for steady heat fluxes of 3 MW/m2 to 5 MW/m2 (temperature at end of pulse 600-750 C) and under pulsed heat fluxes (10-20 MW/m2) for which the time averaged heat flux is 5 MW/m2. The first series of pulses with peak surface temperatures up to 600 C produced no visible fatigue cracks after 2600 stress cycles. In the second series of tests, with T(max) below 750 C, evidence for fatigue appeared after a minimum of 1350 stress cycles (at between 1350 and 2100 stress cycles).
