Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

A Major Accident Reporting System (MARS) has been set up at Ispra, to gather and analyse the accident notifications sent by the member states. The CDCIR (Centro di Documentazione Comunitario sul Rischio Industriale - EC Industrial Risk Documentation Centre) operates within the same logic by collecting and distributing documentation on the various ways in which the Seveso Directive is applied at national level. Studies are also carried out and published to describe the structure and functions of the various organisations involved in managing emergencies, and to examine the ways in which some accidents are dealt with in order to draw technical and organisational conclusions which will assist with future prevention. The main result of the work carried out has been the publication of a series of guidelines on the methods which can be used to provide information to the public.
