An ESPI system for complete in-plane displacement analysis of masonry surfaces is presented. In the optical set-up a LCD is used to switch electronically from the horizontal to the vertical direction of sensitivity. Optical interferometric techniques offer two main advantages over classical strain measurement techniques: full-field visualisation of displacements and non-contact analysis. In this way the strain distribution can be evaluated without affecting the behaviour of the inspected surface. The influence of strain gauges on the specimen behaviour has been demonstrated and the advantages of using the ESPI technique are highlighted.
