The Measurements and Testing programme has organised several series of interlaboratory studies in the field of species analysis. This paper gives a summary of the recommendations of a workshop held in Rome during 1994, on trends in speciation analysis. It focuses on the field of inorganic speciation. Projects currently undertaken in this field within the Measurements and Testing programme, dealing with the determinations of total and mobile forms of Al, Cr(III) and Cr(VI), Se(IV), Se(VI) and organic forms of Se, As(III), As(V) and organo-As compounds, are also described.
