This paper describes a networked project that is being established in order to map and monitor the major ecosystems in the European-Asian Continent. The experiment will concentrate especially on a few longitudinal transections that will be used for validation of AVHRR based results from the whole area. It is intended that the results of mapping and assessing biodiversity should be available for regional policy making and regional land management. The network of associated institutes and research groups studying land use in this area (timber, husbandry, grazing, cropping etc.) is of particular importance in this project.
