Abstract

Accidents with hazardous materials are normally registered in a number of national and international databases, in order to allow the accident experiences to be shared. An analysis of seven European databases showed that the degree of overlap between the sources and thus the coverage of a single database varies widely, and is generally low, which means that the actual number of accidents occurring is not well known. The presentation describes the comparison of accidents from fixed installations, and estimates the (unknown) number of industrial accidents with hazardous materials.
