The role of PERLA in Euratom safeguards
The objectives of the Safeguards Performance Laboratory PERLA are: (i) performance evaluation of NDA instruments and methods in near real field conditions, on well characterised standards; (ii) regular recalibration of instruments; (iii) training of inspectors and operators; (iv) new developments. This paper illustrates the role of PERLA after eight years of operation in support of the Euratom Safeguards Directorate. Particular attention is paid to the technology transfer function of the laboratory and customer oriented developments. Training covers techniques such as gamma spectrometry or neutron correlation as well as inspection practices. Finally the paper discusses instrument calibration and measurement traceability.
