Within the user group of the European Microwave Signature Laboratory (EMSL), located at Ispra (Italy), a thematic subgroup is specifically concerned with the scattering properties of non-vegetated terrains. The research activity is focused on the following aspects: (i) validation of surface scattering models undertaking experiments on artificial surfaces with well defined statistical parameters and dielectric properties, and on natural surfaces (e.g. soil samples); (ii) retrieval of soil moisture profiles using multifrequency polarimetric data for different types of soils and roughnesses; (iii) investigation of the polarimetric radar response of soil in the transition from frozen to thawed condition; (iv) investigation of wave penetration in soils when volume scattering is significant (e.g. dry and frozen soil). Preparatory activities and first measurements are in progress. Preliminary results are anticipated.
