The creep behaviour of various materials was characterised by a set of constant load creep tests. Different methods for creep damage measurements were then applied to these specimens. The results can be related to a continuum mechanical damage variable of the Kachanov type by modelling the microstructural degradation. Such damage variables are usually used in constitutive equations for lifetime prediction. The problem of creep failure by microcrack accumulation is discussed by applying a new instability criterion to the highly non-linear constitutive equations.
