Abstract

The JRC operates the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA), which includes a reaction wall (RW), 21 m x 16.5 m, to allow the testing of large-scale models of structures under the effect of earthquakes. The paper reports on the testing of large-scale base isolated structures. The first part of the investigation aims to validate the pseudo-dynamic (PsD) method by comparing results on a medium size structure tested at the vibrating table (VT) facility of the industrial research centre ISMES and the reaction wall of ELSA. In parallel to this, a numerical assessment of the behaviour of different building types coupled with base isolators will be run to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology and the interest of its application.
