Abstract

A mathematical model, describing the momentum, heat and mass exchange in gas-liquid contacting spray columns is presented. The dispersed phase is treated by a three-dimensional Lagrangian approach and the continuous phase by an axisymmetric Eulerian set of equations. The model was successfully applied to the pre-concentrator column of the Ispra Mark 13A flue gas desulfurisation process, where a ternary mixture of HBr and H(2)SO(4) is concentrated to a sulfuric acid solution of about 65 wt%. The model has a general applicability to other spray column types and can easily be extended to treat a wide range of fluid-particle contacting processes, such as spray drying and evaporative cooling.
