Abstract

The JET experimental fusion reactor recently underwent a major upgrade with the installation of a pumped divertor for the control of the impurity influx into the plasma. This paper describes the new power supplies which are required for the divertor coils and to control the plasma. These consist of poloidal divertor field amplifiers (PDFA) based on a line frequency phase controlled thyristor convertor, a fast radial field amplifier (FRFA) based on gate turn off thyristors, and a disruption feedback amplifier system (DFAS) based on isolated gate bipolar transistors. Sophisticated feedback control technology is required because the tokamak plasma is unstable on both macroscopic and microscopic scales.
