Partial electrification through photovoltaic means of rural isolated dwellings in PortugalFunded under: ENG-THERMIE 2
The first programme on photovoltaic (PV) stand-alone systems for rural partial electrification as an alternative to mains supply took place in Portugal, and spread throughout the country, through this demonstration project sponsored by the European Commission since 1987. Four different types of utilisation, in different geographical situations, were chosen as examples for partial rural electrification in nature reserves and municipalities. The project enabled the erection of 52 autonomous PV systems, most of them under 1 kWp, at 44 sites, which provide electricity for low-consumption appliances, such as light, TV, radio, telephone, AC cooling or other devices. The global peak power installed is around 27 kWp. In Portugal, the lack of experience in this field and the absence of efficient and suitable devices for getting the best operation with high user satisfaction at minimum cost are real challenges for which solutions have to be found.
