Pressurised fluidised bed combustion technology enables solid coal to be used for power production in an economic way. The company DBE has tested both the bubbling and the circulating variant of this innovative firing technology at its 15 MW(th) pressurised fluidised bed pilot plant. The results demonstrate the clear process advantages of the circulating variant as regards capability and emission behaviour. A demonstration power plant of the 100 MW(e) class is planned, within a study funded by the European Commission. In the Länder, several operators have shown great interest in carrying out the planning work for the construction of a 150 MW(e) demonstration plant with circulating pressurised fluidised bed combustion. Revision of the basic engineering for the demonstration power plant with circulating pressurised fluidised bed combustion in Phases A and A1 has shown that follow-up plants using this new technology with higher efficiency and low pollution will achieve the range of specific investment costs of conventional atmospheric plants.
