Abstract

There is a growing demand for manipulators with an extended range and high payload. These require lightweight flexible structures, hydraulic drives and sophisticated sensors and control systems. Methods and tools for such manipulators are being developed at Karlsruhe, with safe robust closed-loop control systems. The open-loop control systems above these allow comfortable operation of the machine and the best use of its capabilities. The applicability of these methods has been demonstrated with the Extended Multi Joint Robot system (EMIR), which has a reach of 22.5 m and a payload of 6000 N, and has been enhanced in the course of this project to become a carrier system for decommissioning tasks.
