Abstract

The aim of this project was to develop and test a fingerprinting method for the characterisation of radioactive waste from decommissioning; measurements are confined to a small but statistically justified set of samples. Results, coupled with simpler surveys of the total activity will enable waste to be sentenced, thus minimising the cost of disposal. The method was tested on WAGR bioshield concrete and also B220 ventilation trunking. It was found to be effective for activated waste, if used with caution, but the high heterogeneity of contaminated wastes causes more difficulties; the fingerprinting must be based on widespread sampling and a thorough radiometric survey.
