Fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composite fabrication by electrophoretic infiltration
Electrophoretic infiltration is a novel technique for the fabrication of fibre reinforced composites. The fibres are arranged to form one of the electrodes, so that deposition of the colloidal ceramic occurs in the fibre preform. This method has been investigated for the composite system of carbon fibre reinforced Si(3)N(4) and has produced green composite microstructures with improved infiltration uniformity, better fibre distribution, fewer macro defects and increased density when compared with slurry infiltration.
