The Network for the Evaluation of Steel Components (NESC) has been launched through the JRC to provide an international framework for undertaking collaborative projects designed to investigate the entire process of structural integrity assessment. This paper describes the formation of NESC, its background in PISC and FALSIRE, and its future aims and organisation. The first project, proposed by the UK Health and Safety Executive, is based on the inspection, assessment and testing of a cracked cylinder, representative of a PWR reactor pressure vessel, which will be tested under pressurised thermal shock conditions in AEA Technology's Spinning Cylinder Test Facility.
