Extraction of caffeine and vanillin from drugs by supercritical carbon dioxide
This report describes the extraction of caffeine, vanillin and ethylvanillin (4-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzaldehyde) from medicaments, using supercritical carbon dioxide. Analysis of the extracted compounds was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The extraction yields are compared with those obtained by Soxhlet extraction with ethanol or by maceration of the medicament in methanol. The recovery rates of vanillin, ethyl vanillin, o-vanillin (internal standard) and caffeine obtained by SFE from mixtures of the respective standards with sea sand are 96-100 %.
