Abstract

This article explains the existing EC Directives on waste incineration. Part 1 describes treaty articles that form the legal basis for environmental legislation. EEC environmental policy is briefly examined by discussing the main points in successive five-year Framework programmes. Directives EEC/89/369 and EEC/89/429 on incineration of solid municipal waste are examined in detail and compared with existing Italian legislation in this field. Part 2 is concerned entirely with the new Directive on hazardous waste incineration EEC/94/67. This Directive is examined in detail since it may have implications for Italian legislation. Emission limits are compared with those for solid municipal waste incineration and further developments in this field are examined.
