This paper describes the dynamic behaviour of the high confinement mode (H-mode) of fusion plasmas. It concentrates on two main aspects of H-mode dynamics, the dynamics of the L-H transition and edge localised modes (ELMs). An overview of the experimental signatures of the H-mode is given, as well as a description of existing theoretical models which explain the H-mode. A tentative explanation of the phenomena of L-H transitions is also given, and the experimental characterisation of ELMs is discussed.
