Time dependent neutral gas transport in tokamak edge plasmasFunded under: EAEC-FUSION 12C
The characteristic transport time-scale of the neutral particles in the edge plasma is comparable to the ion acoustic time-scale. Neutral atoms therefore relax to their steady state distributions more slowly than electron temperature profiles are established along the fieldlines. The computational assessment of divertor or limiter dynamics requires ultimately an extension to time dependent algorithms. The numerical procedure in the EIRENE Monte Carlo code is presented. A first numerical study of ELMs in the ASDEX-Upgrade divertor plasma has been carried out and the results are discussed.
