Abstract

In DIII-D three different types of edge localised modes (ELMs) have been observed (types I, II and III). The type III ELMs are similar to those observed on ASDEX, whereas the type I ELMs did not occur on ASDEX. A stability analysis of standard DIII-D discharges indicates that type III ELMs occur well below the ideal ballooning limit. Type I ELMs generally occur close to this limit; there are indications that they also occur in discharges in which the edge is in the connection region to the second stability regime.
