The AVHRR is regarded as a key source of data for describing global land surface processes. In this report NASA's AVHRR global area coverage pathfinder data are compared with the European Commission's global area coverage data set, as a step towards validation of the new NASA product. Results show that the NASA data have considerable potential for describing global land surface processes, such as biomass burning patterns.
