The homogenisation theory for periodic media provides a means to derive an enhanced constitutive model for masonry, related both to the behaviour of its constituent parts (bricks and mortar) and to its geometry. Two cases are considered: both materials may be modelled by a continuum damage law or the mortar may be substituted by elasto-plastic joint elements. In the numerical implementation, particular attention is paid to the boundary conditions and the non-local regularisation of the damage law. Computations are presented for three types of loading: uniaxial vertical compression, uniaxial horizontal compression and pure shear.
