Estimation of tropical forest area from coarse spatial resolution data : A two-step correction function for proportional errors due to spatial aggregation
The mapping of the tropical forest biome has received particular attention since rapid rates of diminution of forest areas have been reported. The use of coarse spatial resolution maps poses several problems linked to the effect of spatial aggregation on the representation of cover-type proportions. The objective of this study was to build a correction function with respect to proportional errors in order to retrieve accurate statistics of tropical forest cover at the scale of the whole tropical forest belt from coarse resolution land cover classifications.
