Abstract

Approximately a quarter of Europe is covered by some type of forest vegetation, a large part of which is in the less favoured areas. At this workshop studies on forestry carried out under the European Collaborative Programme were presented in parallel with other European studies on remote sensing applied to forest classification, mapping and management. Remote sensing is perceived as a useful addition to other information systems, particularly at regional or national scale. The main obstacles to its greater use are the frequent cloud cover over Northern Europe, and the high initial investment costs.
