This paper is concerned with the taking of samples for the in-field analysis of chemical compounds in indoor air. It discusses in detail the dynamics of the indoor environment and the objectives of indoor pollution measurement, and the optimal strategy in this case. The general rules for this strategy are then applied to pollutants currently considered of major importance, and specific recommendations are given. These six special pollutants are formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, suspended particulate matter, asbestos, radon and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
