The aim of this project was to obtain a more complete knowledge of the lakes of Alserio, Annone East, Annone West and Pusiano, to serve as the basis for a restoration plan, appropriate safeguards and rational management for these lakes in the province of Brianza. Three main ecosystem components were examined: the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the lakes; the structure of the phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic populations; and the lake sediments with regard to the amount and bio-availability of eutrophicating substances and to the presence of heavy metals, organochlorines and radionucleides. The results indicate rapid change over the past twenty years from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic condition. Internal phosphorus loadings are also significant in at least three limnic systems. Provided the sewage treatment is upgraded, the lakes can be restored reasonably quickly by taking a number of direct measures. The study concludes by drawing attention to significant contamination by heavy metals such as copper, zinc and cadmium.
