  • Action 1 : Agricultural regional inventories : Stratification methodology using satellite images and a geographical information system - Setting up a sampling scheme

Abstract

The aim of the MARS project on regional inventories is to produce agricultural statistics at regional level using a survey based on area frames. The results are improved with remote sensing data (using a regression estimator). Stratification is used to reduce the sample variability by creating homogeneous groups (strata) of sampling units (segments). The region is stratified by interpretation of high resolution satellite images (Landsat TM is suitable) and local validation from topographical maps. There are three main techniques for stratifying an area: (i) stratification using hard copy of an image that is not geometrically corrected; (ii) stratification using hard copy of a geometrically corrected image; (iii) stratification of a geometrically corrected image displayed on screen. The report first examines the general approach to any stratification, then studies the three techniques.
