Abstract

The problem of model inversion by use of classical optimisation methods and genetic algorithms is addressed, focusing on the comparison of the methods and, subsequently, on the design of hybrid algorithms. The model considered describes satellite measurements in terms of Earth's surface properties. Due to the complexity of this model, no analytic solution is known for the retrieval of the surface properties from measurement data (inversion problem). Optimisation methods, which solve this problem numerically, are compared in terms of accuracy, reliability and computation time.
