Application of innovative methods for phytoplankton analysis
The first experimental cruise of the MITO (microphyte toxins) project was undertaken near Corfu in September 1991. The aims of the exercise were: (i) to study the horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplanktonic communities and their pigments in a dense network of stations, comparing classical and innovative methods of analysis; (ii) to evaluate the performance of flow cytometric techniques for the analysis of phytoplankton, i.e. biomass fluorescence distribution of algae; (iii) to detect changes in population structure associated with environmental factors.
