Research into parallel algorithms and the implementation of 'SPACE' software for the parallel architecture computer (T. Node 64 transputers)
SPACE (the Software for Processing AVHRR data for the Communities of Europe) was developed for the CEC by the Monitoring Agriculture with Remote Sensing (MARS) project. It pre-processes AVHRR images from the NOAA series of satellites as the first step in the preparation of various products aimed at monitoring vegetation condition in Europe. These products include maps showing vegetation indices. The main objective of the work described in this report was to study and implement SPACE on a parallel architecture computer, the T.Node. This computer is a transputer-based DM-MIMD, (Distributed Memory - Multiple Instruction stream, Multiple Data stream) machine. This report describes in detail the algorithms selected for the parallel version of SPACE and presents the results obtained.
