An investigation into nitrogen distribution across Western Europe using simple, passive diffusion tube samplers is described. Sampling was carried out at 85 sites in 15 countries over the year April 1989 - March 1990 using two-week sampling periods. Maps showing average nitrogen dioxide distribution have been prepared for the duration of the survey and for the summer and winter seasons for the whole area surveyed, and separately for the Nordic region and the United Kingdom. Nitrogen dioxide concentrations were generally higher in the winter than summer by an average factor of 1.6 but the distribution pattern was similar in both seasons with the highest concentrations over Belgium and Holland extending into adjacent areas of France, Germany and England with a smaller (and lower average concentration) region over south eastern France and north western Italy. These two areas of higher concentration are shown to coincide roughly with those of maximum nitrogen oxide emissions in Western Europe.
