NEUTRABAS : A neutral product definition database for large multifunctional systemsFunded under: FP3-ESPRIT 3
The project was aimed at the development of a neutral product definition database for large multifunctional systems in shipbuilding and other maritime industries. In NEUTRABAS, ships are regarded as a representative example and ideal test case for large multifunctional systems. The multifunctional aspects create special requirements for the methodolgy of product information modelling and database design. The objective of NEUTRABAS was to define a methodology and to demonstrate the feasibility of a standardised product description supporting a neutral data exchange and archiving capability. The main areas dealt with by the project team were: (i) modelling methodology in compliance with the international ISO Standard STEP (ISO 10303) based on the use of the modelling language EXPRESS (ISO 10303-11); (ii) creation of a neutral database corresponding to the EXPRESS product model; (iii) data management to exchange data between heterogeneous application systems through the neutral database and corresponding software; (iv) implementation of a prototype NEUTRABAS system, and validation testing. This work describes the main development and conclusions of the project.
