Abstract

A digital animation system based on JPEG and MPEG movie production has been developed. The results of time dependent scientific data visualistion are animated on graphics workstations. A system for editing a sequence of stills into a movie (including multi-track special effects) has been written. The resultant animations can be viewed either directly on the workstation or recorded to a video tape via a dedicated PC. The system has been applied to visualise data from remote sensing, 3-d oceanographic modelling and fluid mechanics. The visualisation methods used vary and are also described in the paper. Several short examples of these animations can be seen on the World Wide Web.
