Automated evaluation of grain morphology in austenitic steels with image processing methods
The determination of the grain morphology of two types of austenitic steels has been performed with a QUANTIMET 570 image processing system. The images have been taken from plane micrographs. The applied grey and binary image transformations as well as a developed interactive program performing all necessary operations and calculations are briefly described. The quality of the detection of the material's grain structure is verified quantitatively by basic stereologic equations. The cell structures in the plane sections are investigated with respect to the different characteristic cell parameters (area, perimeter and number of nodes per cell). The number density, which is the characteristic parameter for the Poisson-Voronoi model, the homogeneous Johnson-Mehl model and the ASTM model, has been calculated from the main values of the cell-characterising quantities. The distributions of these parameters are compared with the theoretical distributions for the Poisson-Voronoi mosaic. The applicability of the models is discussed.
