Abstract

The experimental programme KROTOS at JRC Ispra investigates the energetic FCI in well-controlled one- or two-dimensional geometries, and has the advantage of being able to use fuel simulants (Sn, Al(2)O(3)) or recent reactor fuel melt (UO(2)/ZrO(2)). The KROTOS experiments have become the main reference experiments for investigating the escalation and propagation (or thermal detonation) behaviour of interactions in melt/coolant systems (vapour explosions).
