Computer simulations in support to the calibration of impact rigs for dynamic component crash testing
The paper describes the computer simulations performed in the frame of a European programme activity related to the calibration of impact rigs for dynamic components crash testing. Extruded aluminium columns tested experimentally under crash conditions have been examined numerically. The modelling technique is based on an explicit time integration, using a regular mesh of shell elements and encountering for self-contact, large displacement, finite strains and strain-rate sensitivity.
