The Institute for Advanced Materials at the JRC is responsible for the operation and management of three networks: AMES, NESC, ENIQ. Each of these deals with the fitness for their purpose of materials used in particular types of structural components. This paper describes the structure and objectives of these networks. Particular emphasis is given to AMES, which is concerned with the study and evaluation of ageing materials, i.e. reactor pressure vessel steels suffering the effects of irradiation and thermal degradation over a period of years.
