Abstract

The grain morphology of the austenitic steel AMCR0033 was determined with a QUANTIMET 570 image processing system. The images were taken from a plane micrograph. The applied grey and binary image transformations improving the visibility of the grain boundaries are described. The cell structure in the plane sections was investigated with respect to different characteristic cell parameters. The experimentally obtained mean values are compared with the theoretical values predicted by the Poisson-Voroni model, the Johnson-Mehl model and the ASTM model. It was found that these mean values for the different distributions are in agreement with the theoretical ones for each of the three models. For the Poisson-Voronoi mosaic the distributions of the measured quantities are also known. The measured distributions are compared with those predicted, and it is found that significant differences in the shape of the distributions occur.
