Along Track Scanning Radiometer-1 (ATSR-1) data of part of the Acre State in Brazil were examined with a view to assessing their potential use for the detection of clearings within dense humid tropical forests. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery as a reference, a comparison of ATSR-1 and NOAA-11 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images obtained within a day of each other indicated that the depiction of large forest clearings was better defined both spectrally and spatially on the ATSR-1 imagery than on that of the AVHRR. The reasons for these finding are discussed.
