Abstract

The objective of this review study was a critical evaluation of the state of the art in the different research areas of the EC-coordinated project MIRAGE. The study focused on research work such as geochemical behaviour of radionuclides in natural aquifer systems including colloids and organic materials, natural migration systems including natural analogue studies, modelling of radionuclide migration including model verification and validation, and finally migration and retardation experiments performed by laboratory and in-situ tests. The review was carried out with two main goals in mind: (i) to evaluate how the results obtained from the MIRAGE project contribute to performance/safety assessment of deep geological disposal of radioactive waste; (ii) to provide the Commission with advice on the most important issues where further work is required or where understanding is sufficient.
