In this report the principles underlying electronic speckle pattern inferferometry (ESPI) are explained. The use of fibre optics in this field could be particularly useful in the development of systems that are more flexible, compact and easily transportable than conventional systems based on discrete optics. Several uses in the development of portable non-destructive testing systems and endoscopic systems are presented. Phase fluctuations due to ambient heat gradients are offset by means of an optometric monitoring system. The report also presents a simple application of the phase stepping technique, necessary for quantitative interpretation of interferograms.
