The electrical system of the W7-X fusion experiment comprises seven electrical circuits with superconducting coil systems. Each coil system consists of ten individual coils connected in series. All these circuits are connected magnetically in toroidal orientation and a separate power supply must be available for each. This is to be achieved by use of thyristors. A current of 20 kA per system is envisaged. The quench safety system in W7-X is designed to protect the coil system from damage by disruptions and thus has to be as reliable as possible. The safety system proposed makes use of the very latest existing technology.
