Abstract

An overview is presented of the research priorities supported by the Radiation Protection programme since 1980 in the field of exposure to radon decay products. Emphasis is given to major achievements during the last five years, relating to the characterisation of radon decay products, to animal experiments and to the development of remedial actions including modelling of radon movement in soil and inside dwellings. Finally some perspectives are presented of an improved assessment of risk due to the inhalation of radon decay products, through a multidisciplinary approach including physico-chemical studies, lung deposition modelling, cellular and molecular biology, animal experiments and epidemiology.
