Monitoring agriculture with remote sensing : The MARS project
The main activities of the MARS project relate to the quantitative estimation of the acreages occupied by the various crops in a given region or country, vegetation and crop state monitoring, timely crop yield forecasting of mean crop yields per country and the rapid and timely estimation of the EC's total production of the most important crops. The crop state monitoring and early yield forecasting activities are still in a validation stage and are carried out on a pre-operational scale by the JRC. In this presentation, methods, results and examples of outputs of the various activities are presented and an evaluation is made of their state of advancement and the needs for improvement or further development. Future perspectives, mainly related to the integrated use of the various Actions into one Advanced Agricultural Information System and for the development of a system for foreign crop production forecasting are indicated.
