Towards a multi-scale GIS for European forest ecosystems : The PHARE MERA and FIRS projects
The European Commission is currently promoting the development of a multi-scale European forest information system, based on satellite remote sensing. The aim of the MERA (MARS and environmental related activities) project, which is being carried out under the PHARE regional environmental programme, is to extend the implementation of operational GIS and satellite remote sensing methodologies for mapping and monitoring agriculture, forest ecosystems and land degradation, from the European Union to central and eastern Europe. Within the MERA forest ecosystems mapping sub-project, components of the FIRS project are being implemented on a national level in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. Because the MERA project is being carried out on a national level, care must be taken to ensure the compatibility of the resulting forest information between countries and within a pan-European context.
